Airbags are designed to save lives in the event of an auto accident. Unfortunately, defective airbags can lead to serious injuries and even death for a vehicle’s occupants. With roughly 24 million vehicles affected worldwide, Takata airbag defects have resulted in one of the largest ever automotive recalls.
Vehicles manufactured by 10 automakers and multiple model years have been subject to recall due to safety concerns regarding Takata airbags.
If you or someone you care about was harmed due to an airbag defect, call The Gilbert Law Group® at (888) 711-5947for a free review of your case.
The defective airbags manufactured by Takata are a safety hazard because the inflator component can rupture when the airbag deploys, propelling metal and plastic debris into the passenger compartment. The defect is the result of mishandled propellant within the airbag, which could deteriorate over time. Deterioration of the propellant increases internal pressure, thus making an explosive deployment more likely.
Depending on the make and model, the defective airbags were installed in the front of the vehicle on the driver side, passenger side, or both sides.
Some of the earliest Takata recalls were issued in regions like the Southeastern United States and Hawaii because intense heat and humidity are believed to accelerate the process of deterioration. However, many automakers have expanded their recalls nationwide.
Shrapnel launched from the ruptured airbag housing travels at high speeds, posing a danger to the driver and passengers inside the vehicle.
Victims have suffered severe injuries to multiple parts of the body:
After sustaining injury from the metal and plastic shards, several victims have also died. The trauma from the ruptured airbag was so extreme in some of these fatal accidents that the police initially believed the victim had suffered a gunshot or stab wound.
