IKEA Dresser Consumer Warning for Children

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a warning about IKEA dressers and drawers that pose a serious risk of injury and death to children. Two deaths have been reported from the dressers toppling on children.

If a child sees an object he or she wants on top of the dresser, his or her natural inclination will be to climb the dresser. An unanchored chest of drawers can come toppling down on top of the child. According to the Safety Commission, a child is injured every 24 minutes from toppling furniture and every two weeks a child dies from toppling furniture or televisions.

Watch this report from NBC Today on the danger.

Luckily there is a way to prevent this tragedy from happening to your child. IKEA is offering free wall anchoring kits for the 27 million pieces of furniture that put children at risk. IKEA and the Safety Commission urge consumers to anchor chest of draws to the wall for children’s safety. As one mother put it, “the reality is that five dollars and fifteen minutes could have saved [my daughter’s] life."
