German automakers BMW, Volkswagen, and Daimler are set to recall more than 2.5 million vehicles in the United States fitted with defective air bag inflators manufactured by Japanese automotive supplier Taketa Corp. The air bags, which Taketa declared defective in January 2016, have been known to shoot metal fragments into vehicle occupants in the event of a collision. This brings the total number of affected vehicles in the U.S. to approximately 5.1 million, as Ford, Honda and Mazda have already recalled 2.6 million affected vehicles. More details on the affected vehicles are set to be released shortly from the manufacturers.
This recall expands Taketa’s long history of producing unsafe products. Approximately 28 million air bag inflators manufactured by the company have been recalled since the beginning of their safety crisis in 2009. The recently recalled inflators have been linked to ten worldwide deaths, nine of which occurred in the United States involving Honda cars.
