Honda Recalls 634,000 Odysseys for Second-Row Seat Defects

Honda Motors has announced a recall of its Honda Odyssey minivans in the United States due to the discovery of a faulty seat latch in the second-row seats. The affected minivans have a lever that allows the second row to slide forward, making room for passengers to move between the second and third rows. This lever is reported to have issues with not locking in place, which can increase the risk of injuries of passengers in the event of a car accident. Passengers can slide back and forth, hitting their legs against the front seats, especially at high speeds. There are currently no reported injuries or accidents directly related to the faulty seat lever.

The Odyssey minivans affect model years 2011-2016, manufactured from August 17, 2010 to October 1, 2015.

The issue with the vehicle first came to light in 2011 when Odyssey owners complained to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the rear seats detaching or moving forward, which propelled children towards the front seats and resulted in bruises and cuts. The owners attributed the cause to the Odyssey back seats, but Honda was not able to verify the cause and decided to monitor the field for further incidents. Ongoing investigation eventually led to the current recall.

Odyssey owners will be notified by mail in mid-February, according to Honda. However, Honda has said that the parts needed to fix the defect may not be available until the spring.

Repairs done for recalls will be performed by dealers at no cost.
