BMW has initiated a recall of more than 45,000 older 7-Series cars in the United States after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) asked the company about owner complaints regarding doors opening unexpectedly. The agency asked if a 2012 recall of around 7,500 7-Series cars manufactured from 2005 to 2007 should be expanded and if the remedy was sufficient.
The recall covers certain cars manufactured from the 2005 through 2008 model years that have the comfort access and soft door close options. Soft close automatic doors allow the car’s doors to be closed more gently than traditional doors. Models include the following:
- B7 Alpina
According to documents posted by the government, the latches can malfunction over time; however, the records didn’t specify if the problem had caused any crashes or injuries. People have reported
The company investigated the issue and agreed to another recall, but it is still trying to find the cause of the problem and develop a solution. If you think you might be affected, call BMW at (800) 525-7417. BMW indicated owners should expect a letter asking them to make an appointment when a fix is available.
