How Common Are Serious Burn Injuries?
Around 1.2 million people suffer burn injuries each year; of those, 50,000 require hospitalization or admission to a burn center and 3,500 do not survive their wounds. Aside from residential fires, which are the most common cause of burn deaths, accidents including airplanes, cars or other motor vehicles, or workplace errors can result in these devastating injuries.
Burns are generally classified in degrees, with first-degree the mildest and sixth-degree the most serious. Sixth-degree burns, which penetrate every level of tissue, are always fatal. Though third-, fourth-, and fifth-degree burns may be survivable depending on how widespread they are, there is no “return to normal” for patients with these injuries. Even the best doctors cannot remove the potential for long-term pain, scarring, and other impacts. If you or a loved one has been the victim of an accident that caused a burn injury, you may be entitled to compensation for medical care, loss of income, disfigurement, pain and suffering, and more.
Causes of Burn Accidents
Many products come with burn hazards, often without correct labeling to inform consumers of the risks. Household chemicals used in some cleaners can cause burns if they come into direct contact with skin. Additionally, dangerous goods can combust or act as an accelerant in a house fire. Medicated shampoos, for example, are extremely flammable and can combust in an instant.
Other injuries that may give you cause for action can come from house fires caused by malfunctioning products. Consumers sadly suffer burn injuries at home every year due to flammable clothing, water heaters that are too hot, defective smoke detectors, and other household items.
If you or a loved one was burned in a work-related accident, you may be able to file for compensation as well. Burn victims injured on the job have received damages after being forced to operate unsafe equipment and for burns caused by exploding plastic resin, escaped steam, acid, molten metal, and more.
Treatment for Burn Victims
One positive piece of news is that the medical treatment for burn victims has improved tremendously in recent years. There are around 100 centers around the country that specialize in treating the ongoing effects of severe burns. While such facilities are lifelines to seriously burned patients, they are necessary because these injuries require the most up-to-date facilities and a high degree of specialization among the medical staff. Aside from potential difficulty physically accessing a burn center, the high price tag—which can be over $200,000 for a year of treatment—is out of many peoples’ reach.
Treatment for burn injuries is likely to persist for years, and symptoms may affect patients for the rest of their lives. Anyone who was injured in an accident caused by someone else has the right to be compensated for all these expenses. When you speak with our attorneys in a free consultation, we can help you understand your legal options, so you can make sure you are cared for medically and otherwise.
Helping Burn Injury Victims Outside the Courtroom
Working as personal injury lawyers, we sadly witness the horrific effects of many accidents. Some of our saddest cases have involved children who sustained serious, lifelong disabilities because of burn injuries. While we dedicate our days to fighting for justice for accident victims, our team is always looking for ways to do more.
We wholeheartedly support the Children’s Hospital Burn Unit in Denver. For several decades, the burn units at Children’s Hospitals throughout the country have been committed to providing the highest standard of care for pediatric burn patients and providing burn prevention education. Our firm proudly supports the Children’s Hospital and has helped fundraise for and sponsor programs such as their annual Burn Camps for injured children.
