Lead poisoning is the number one children’s environmental health hazard, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Children can be exposed to lead in numerous everyday situations. Your child can be a victim of lead poisoning, and you may not even know it.
Lead is a toxic element that can have lasting effects on individuals who are exposed, especially children. It is found in numerous products and places, especially those from past eras. Lead does not biodegrade, and it will never leave your body after you ingest it. It is simply one of the worst environmental hazards on earth.
If your child was exposed to lead, you deserve the chance to hold the at-fault party accountable. The Gilbert Law Group® is here to represent you in a lead poisoning claim.

The Effects of Lead Poisoning
Lead poisoning physiologically affects children much more than it does adults. The adult body absorbs about 10% of the lead it ingests, while a child’s body absorbs up to 50%. Children also suffer worse effects because they are still developing. Data from the CDC shows that 3% of children in the U.S. may have dangerous blood lead levels (BLL).
Lead poisoning can cause serious symptoms, including:
- Brain damage and cognitive delays
- Damage to the nervous system
- Hearing problems
- Anemia
- Headaches
- Slowed growth
- Delayed puberty
- Seizures
- Coma
- Death
There is no BLL considered safe; though some children do not show obvious symptoms, lead can still cause serious damage if it is present even in small levels.
Testing for Lead Exposure
The CDC recommends testing for anyone who may be exposed to lead paint in old houses. Given the many other places where you could come in contact with lead, it may be wise to consider testing if you or your children have any of the symptoms we’ve listed and you think you may have been exposed.
The Government Isn't Doing Enough
The federal government has tried to eradicate lead from our lives over many years, but the substance is still found in consumer products today. Unfortunately, it is quite easy for a child to come into contact with dangerous levels of this poison. Lead can still be found almost everywhere—on the walls of old houses, in toys, in batteries, in pipes, in ammunition, in some pottery glazes, in some inks, in paints used for boats, in industrial buildings and machines, and in military environments. Lead was even found recently in artificial field turf. The manufacturers and distributors of these products must be held accountable, and one way we can help is by taking them to court.
Lead paint is also an issue. Though the substance was banned for use in household paint in 1978, older buildings often still have high lead levels. The landlords and owners of these homes may be liable for any toxic effects on their tenants.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists even more lead sources including groundwater, soil, the areas around old smelting facilities, household dust, certain job sites, some foods and potable liquids, related to hobbies like pottery and painting, and in some home remedies. With all these dangers, it’s easy to see how you or your child could suffer lead poisoning without even knowing about it.
