Toy Safety: Alarming Dangers Persist
Recent statistics present a startling picture of a class of products that are supposed to bring enjoyment to your children. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in 2018, 17 children died in toy-related accidents and around 226,100 ended up in an emergency room due to their injuries.
Most of the toy-related injuries (70%) impacted children under 12 years of age; all of the deaths were among children younger than 15. Non-motorized scooters were the most common culprit for both injuries and deaths among children. Choking hazards caused by rubber balls and balloons were involved in 3 fatalities. Drowning and electrocution were also responsible for child fatalities. Among injury victims, the head and face were most likely to be affected in a toy-related accident.
The government recalls children’s products, including toys, at an alarming rate. While it is better to have dangerous toys and games removed from the shelves than available for purchase, the fact that so many hazardous products make it to our stores is worrisome.
Negligent Toy Manufacturers
The manufacturers of dangerous toys need to be held accountable for any injuries caused by them. Because children are among the most vulnerable members of society, toymakers must follow the highest possible safety standards. When they do not, we are here to help the victims.
Thankfully, federal regulations have helped to reduce the number of child injuries and deaths from defective and dangerous toys and games. The Child Safety Protection Act requires toy and game manufacturers to place visible warning labels on packaging for small balls, balloons, marbles, and some toys and games containing small parts. The Hazardous Substances Act bans dangerous substances and materials like lead from toys, games, and children’s clothing. If you purchase a toy or game that you believe does not comply with federal regulations, please contact the CPSC to report your concerns. Then, reach out to our team if your child was injured.
